Dear friends,
“Did you ever think you’d be ending your time in ministry like this?” someone asked me
recently. The answer was, of course, “No.” From the time I went to theological college 45
years ago I have lived out the rhythm of the Church Year in prayer and worship. Advent,
Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, Ascension, Pentecost and the Trinity Season with Harvest
Festival and Remembrance Sunday have provided the pattern that has shaped and
deepened my faith and that of many others, enabling us to face life’s challenges. This year,
however, as Ash Wednesday approaches, there’s a distinctly ‘Groundhog Day’ feel to things.
It’s almost as though we’ve already been in Lent for much of the past twelve months.

As an antidote to Covid gloom, Delyth is injecting us with some welcome joy this week by
holding a Zoom Pancake Party on Shrove Tuesday at 11am. Let her know if you would like to
attend. People are asked to put £5 in an envelope which will be collected and given to Plant
Dewi, our diocesan children’s charity. This takes the place of the annual Plant Dewi pancake
coffee morning in St Peter’s Civic Hall, which has had to be cancelled this year. Delyth and
Kristie will be leading us through a ‘Holy Habits’ Lent Course on Zoom, starting on Ash
Wednesday at 7pm, which sounds as though it should be rather good.

More Dates for your Diary: The Church Council will meet on Zoom on Thursday 18 February
at 7pm. The following morning I’m responsible for the ‘Weekend Word’ on BBC Radio Wales
at 7.20am (hopefully Helen will kick me out of bed in time to do the broadcast over the
telephone). On Tuesday 23 February the full Local Ministry Area Council (which officially
replaces the old PCCs of all the LMA churches) will meet on Zoom at 7pm. The Mothers
Union ‘Wave of Prayer’ takes place at 1pm on Thursday 25 February. Material will be
provided for members to take part in their own homes. This year Christ Church is also
hosting the ecumenical ‘World Day of Prayer’ (formerly the ‘Women’s World Day of Prayer’)
on Zoom on Friday 5 March. Delyth will be welcoming people to the Welsh service at 11am,
and Kristie will welcome them to the English service at 2pm
