Dear friends,
Happy St Patrick’s Day! As I am 69 today, this is very definitely my final St Patrick’s Day in
Christ Church. The Welsh-born Apostle of Ireland has been my companion, guardian and
guide throughout my life. I hope you’ll forgive me for including his most famous prayer:
‘Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me,
Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend
and stranger.’

Four years ago, in the early hours after my 65 th birthday I had the most massive of my
several heart attacks. Providentially I was a patient in the Cardiac Unit of Glangwili at the
time, and a wonderful team of doctors and nurses succeeded in bringing me back to life
again. Since then, every day has been a bonus. During the Covid crisis we are repeatedly
given the number of those who have died from the grim virus. However, perhaps there
should also be a record of all those whose lives have been saved as a result of the efforts
and self-sacrifice of so many dedicated medical staff.

The reopening of hairdressers is a great relief. I’ve an appointment booked with Jayne for
this Thursday, and look forward to losing the curls that are repeatedly mocked by Helen.
Strictly speaking, I should have waited for another fortnight, because Maundy Thursday is
also known as ‘Shere Thursday’. In the Middle Ages it was the day on which the clergy
always had their locks shorn so that they would be suitably tidy for Good Friday and Easter.
